Polystyrene has been around for longer than polyurethane and has experienced a widespread use. Polystyrene is used in everything from crafts to cups and extruded polystyrene foam is used in insulation.
Polystyrene is a synthetic aromatic polymer made from the monomer styrene which is also known as Styrofoam. It is the white brittle material that is frequently used in shipping to protect the goods inside.
Polystyrene is pre-formed to the steel panels and is usually glued to both the front and back of the inside of the panel. It maintains its shape and fits better than open cell polyurethane over a long period of time and does not degrade, deform, or lose R-Value. Most manufacturers use closed cell polyurethane negating many of the positives mentioned.
The less expensive of the two, polystyrene is a popular choice for insulating overhead garage doors because of its good value and simple installation. It’s manufactured in sheets, and panels are cut and attached to your garage door’s individual sections. It’s also waterproof and comes in various thicknesses. The thickness of your polystyrene will directly affect your insulation factor or R value. Typically, you can count on a rating of R2 per inch up to a value of around R10.
Foam Injected is also called Polyurethane Injected Garage doors. Polyurethane insulation is often referred to as spray foam. Although a newer product than polystyrene, it has caught on quickly due to its high efficiency and ease of use.
Polyurethane is sprayed into each panel and makes a very tight fit which will add to the rigidity of the panel when it is new giving it a higher R-Value. Pressure-injected garage doors with polyurethane foam have R-values between R-12 and R-18.
Polyurethane is the more expensive material of the two but doesn’t usually add too much more money to the price of the door. It is important to make sure that the steel skins of the door are not too thin because two things could happen. One, the door will dent easily or two, small waves will appear across the sections and can generally be seen within five feet. This will obviously make the door not look so hot.
A potential drawback of chain drive garage openers is the noise associated with their operation. Fortunately, manufacturers have been working to help mitigate the noise produced by the chain drive. New models can come equipped with chain separators that keep the chain from hitting against the track, and models with soft start-and-stop technology can be significantly quieter than the chain drive units of the past.

Additionally, according to some of our customers, the sound of the garage door opening or closing actually alerts them to arrivals and departures and is an added security against forced entry. Little wonder then that affordably priced chain drive garage door openers are a consumer favorite nationwide.
